Walls And Beyond

Opened on December 10, 2022 at Dilek Sabancı Art Gallery, the exhibition presents over a hundred tapestries from different collections, where the instinct to decorate walls, as old as human history, is combined with the oldest form of woven textiles.
Following the historical development of wall decoration and tapestries throughout history, starting with cave paintings, this exhibition aims to create a multifaceted reading by bringing together different interpretations and disciplines. In this direction, it particularly focuses on the transformation of tapestries into works of art over time.
The tapestries found in Mardin Kırklar Church, houses in the region, Ezidi villages and borrowed for the exhibition and two giant tapestries of Özdemir Altan’s TRT Radio House are exhibited together for the first time here. The patterns prepared by Özdemir Altan’s teacher Zeki Faik İzer for two different tapestries can also be seen for the first time in this exhibition. Contemporary works created by artists such as Vahap Avşar, Belkıs Balpınar, Burhan Doğançay, Gülsün Karamustafa, Tulga Tollu and Gültekin Çizgen using traditional Turkish weaving techniques represent the new artistic approach of the 20th century.
Walls and Beyond invites viewers to a unique discovery by bringing together wall weavings produced in different periods and geographies, with different techniques and for different purposes.
