Motherland – Halil Altındere

Motherland is a striking selection of installations, sculptures, videos, photographs, canvases and neons that Halil Altındere has been creating with his unique, sarcastic opposition since the late 1990s; It covers the works he has produced in recent years, blending the science fiction universe of Star Wars with the traditions of murakka and miniature. Among the thirty-seven works dealing with power structures, institutions, borders, identities, wars, technologies, traditions, futures, popular culture and subcultures, along with the carpets with militarist iconography that he produced using artificial intelligence and robotic knitting technique in the last two years, the carpets he produced in the focus of Mardin and There is also an animation that has not been exhibited before. By using an Airbus A300 plane stripped of its real functionality as a found object in Köfte Airlines, the artist refers to both the dangerous journey of refugees and the unsafe conditions of travel on a train in poor and crowded countries. The Homeland video, on the other hand, deals with the absurd situation faced by refugees in their search for a new life, who display extraordinary skills to pass through a minefield and overcome wire fences. He reveals the conflicts that continued throughout all these escapes with the Turkish Military Drones Carpet series, inspired by Afghan war carpets, in which he depicts unmanned defense, intelligence and attack flight equipment that has become normalized by infiltrating daily life. In his latest works, where he blends tradition with the future, he continues to search for conflicts and boundaries beyond the stars. The strong ties of power with propaganda and historiography with fiction; questions in a vast line extending from ancient empires to distant galaxies…
